F-80 practice test: one mixed round across all 12 zones
One mixed round from all 12 zones we split the Study Material into. Every question has four options, the same shape as the real F-80 (Source: Study Material p. 13). Strike the options you can rule out, choose, then read the note under each option. Terms you trip on are explained in the key terms zone.

The checkpoint round
Checkpoint round
0 of 46 checked · 0 cleared
Practice questions written for study, not taken from the test. The real F-80 is a multiple-choice test on a touch-screen computer at FDNY Headquarters.
Use the zone chips to walk one zone only. Your strikes are scored along with your answer.
How the checkpoint round works
Read the options first and rule out the ones that break a rule, then pick from what is left. After you answer, the debrief explains every option and scores your strikes. Keys: 1–5 or A–E answer, Shift with a number rules that option out, the arrow keys move.
Checkpoint 1 of 46
Checkpoint 01Zone E · Alarm panel
Burnt food sets off a smoke detector. Staff sort it out just as the central station dispatches the FDNY. What must go in the fire safety log book?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AThe time alone tells an inspector nothing about what caused the alarm or how it was handled.
- BThe FDNY still responds and verifies the condition; the log should record what happened, not claim the alarm was canceled.
- CA burnt-food activation is not an impairment, so there is no reason to take the zone off-line.
- DCorrect: The log should show what staff checked and what they found, so the activation and its cause are on record.
Checkpoint 02Zone B · Key terms
In a homeless shelter, who makes up the Fire and Emergency Preparedness (FEP) staff?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AThese job titles are not the group the Study Material names as FEP staff for a shelter.
- BCentral station operators work off site; FEP staff are people in the shelter named in the plan.
- CThe owner is responsible for the building, but the Study Material does not list the owner as FEP staff.
- DCorrect: in a shelter, FEP staff include the coordinator, the deputy coordinator and the fire guards.
Checkpoint 03Zone H · Out of service
AC power returns after a long outage. A fire watch was started because the backup batteries ran down. What must happen before the fire watch ends?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- APower coming back for a moment does not prove the panel and batteries work; ending the fire watch now can leave a gap.
- BCorrect: Before ending the impairment, the system is inspected and tested to confirm it works, and only then do the fire watch and other measures stop.
- CResetting the panel over and over does not restore power or prove the system works.
- DAsking the central station to ignore signals would hide real alarms; no one should ever request that.
Checkpoint 04Zone D · Drills
After a required fire drill, the coordinator notices that several FEP staff members failed to check the restrooms before evacuating. What is the most appropriate follow-up action?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AA known weakness should be fixed now; waiting for an FDNY inspection leaves the gap in place for months.
- BRestrooms must still be searched; changing the routes does not remove the need to clear every room.
- CCorrect: The drill found a weakness, so retrain the staff involved and record the evaluation, including the deficiency and what was done about it.
- DThe drill record must include an evaluation with any delays and deficiencies; leaving out the errors defeats the purpose.
Checkpoint 05Zone K · Shelter hazards
A resident asks where and when to charge a phone. Which advice follows the lithium-ion battery safety rules?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AA bed is one of the places the lithium-ion rules name as off-limits for charging, asleep or awake.
- BOvernight charging is on the never list; a charging battery should not be left alone while everyone sleeps.
- CCorrect: daytime charging away from a bed or couch avoids both things the rules forbid, the overnight charge and the soft, flammable spot.
- DUnder a pillow is the first place the rules name; heat is trapped there and bedding catches fire easily.
Checkpoint 06Zone C · Preparedness plan
During a full evacuation, a resident’s motorized wheelchair gets stuck and blocks a key exit stairwell. To keep people safe, what is the BEST action for the coordinator?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AStopping the evacuation to take a wheelchair apart keeps everyone behind it in danger.
- BForcing the chair and resident down the stairs risks injuring both the resident and staff.
- CCorrect: The person matters, not the device; move the resident with staff help, clear the stair, and tell responders what was left behind.
- DLeaving the resident in a stuck chair in the stairwell abandons them in the path of smoke.
Checkpoint 07Zone A · Coordinator role
A fire guard on patrol finds a fire safety violation and reports it. Who must ultimately ensure that the violation is corrected?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- AThe fire guard may fix it during the patrol, but the final responsibility does not stay with the guard.
- BMaintenance may do the repair work, yet they are not the ones the Study Material holds responsible.
- CWaiting for an inspection is out; the shelter must correct the violation itself, and one person owns that.
- DCorrect: the guard reports it, and the coordinator must make sure the violation is corrected.
Checkpoint 08Zone L · Emergency shelters
Drapes and curtains hang in a shelter’s public lounge. What does the Study Material require for certain decorations like these?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- ACorrect: the material must resist flame by itself or be treated with a flame retardant.
- BAn alarm outage calls for a fire watch; it does not require taking decorations down.
- CNatural fibers can burn easily; the rule is about flame resistance or treatment, not the fiber type.
- DYearly replacement is not the rule; what matters is that the material is flame resistant or treated.
Checkpoint 09Zone G · Sprinklers, standpipes
During an emergency, an unqualified maintenance worker sees poor standpipe water flow and goes to adjust the outside Siamese connection valves by hand. What should the coordinator do?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- ACorrect: The siamese connection is there for firefighters; unqualified people must not operate it, least of all during an emergency.
- BHanding over tools encourages unqualified work on a system firefighters may be about to use.
- CLogging the adjustment after it happens does not prevent the damage; the coordinator has to stop it.
- DHelping by radio still lets an unqualified person change a system that belongs to firefighting operations.
Checkpoint 10Zone I · Extinguishers
You find an extinguisher in the main corridor with a cracked hose and a gauge reading well below the green range. What must be done with it?
Rule out what you can with the ✕ buttons, then choose. The debrief for every option opens here.
- ACorrect: A cracked hose and low pressure fail the quick check, so the unit is taken out of service, tagged, and serviced by a company on the FDNY’s list of extinguisher companies.
- BHiding a defective unit in a storage room leaves a gap on the floor and delays repair until some later visit.
- CExtinguishers are recharged only by qualified service companies; a shop air compressor can damage the unit.
- DParts are not swapped between extinguishers; a hose from another type may not work with this agent or pressure.
Checkpoint 11Zone J · Procedures and logs

Working one checkpoint
Read the four options first
The options tell you which rule the question is about: the panel, a drill, a log book. Then read the question once, with that rule in mind.
Strike what breaks a rule
Press the cross next to an option to rule it out. Wrong options here break one thing you can name: the wrong person, the wrong order, or a step done without the FDNY.
Decide between the last two
Find the one word that separates them: before or after, owner or coordinator, monthly or yearly. Pick the option that matches the Study Material.
Read every note
Each option has a note that says why it is right or wrong. The notes on the wrong options are where the rule sits. For the rule in full, open the study guide.
Two rounds of strikes, worked
A shelter is about to run a fire drill. What has to happen before anyone activates the alarm?
- AAnnounce the drill on the public address systemOut in round 2
- BCall the central station and have the system placed off-lineKeep
- CSilence the horns at the fire alarm control panelOut in round 1
- DReset the panel so the drill starts from a clean stateOut in round 1
- Round 1 — rule out C and D.Silence and reset belong after an alarm, not before one. Silencing needs FDNY authorization, and a reset comes only after the condition is cleared.
- Round 2 — rule out A.An announcement is part of the drill, but it comes later in the procedure. If the central station is not told first, the alarm goes to the FDNY as a real fire.
Keep B. The drill procedure starts with the call to the central station. The log then records the time off-line, the reason, and the central station’s name and phone number (Source: Study Material §7.1).
About this round
Are these the questions on the FDNY test?
No. We wrote them for study from the FDNY Study Material, revised January 2026. The FDNY publishes only three sample questions, and those are about the rules in the test room (Source: Study Material p. 12).
Does a guess cost points on the real test?
No. The Study Material says there is no penalty for guessing. A blank answer, or more than one answer, is scored as wrong (Source: Study Material p. 13, as of October 2026). So never leave a question empty.
Can I practice one zone at a time?
Yes. Tap a zone chip above the round, or open the zone page itself. Each zone page has its own round with more questions on that zone.
When should I move to the timed test?
When you clear most zones in this round without a miss. Then take the timed mock exam: 50 questions under a 75-minute clock, with no notes until the end.
Practice on the train, too
The F-80 app is ours, for iPhone and iPad. On Android or a computer, this page and the zone rounds stay free.
