About this site
About this site
Two Ways Out is an independent study site for the F-80 Certificate of Fitness. It is written for the shelter staff and fire guards who must pass the FDNY test and then do the job. We are not the FDNY, not a school, and not part of any city agency.

How the notes are built
Every rule on these pages comes from the FDNY Study Material for the F-80, revised January 2026. Where a page cites a section, the link opens the FDNY PDF on nyc.gov.
Test facts, such as the fee, the pass mark and the renewal rules, come from the FDNY and NYC Business pages. Each fact page names its source and the date we checked it.
The practice questions are our own, written for study from the Study Material. They are not taken from the FDNY test. Each option carries a note that says which rule makes it right or wrong.
What this site does not do
- Replace the school course the FDNY requires before the test
- Speak for the FDNY, the City of New York or DHS
- Tell you what your own building needs: that is your shelter’s plan and the FDNY
- Predict your test score
Words this site uses
- Zone
- One of the 12 parts we split the Study Material into. Each zone has its own page.
- Concept page
- A page for one idea that is easy to confuse, such as fire guard and fire watch.
- Checkpoint
- One practice question in a round.
- Strike
- Ruling out an option before you choose. The round scores your strikes too.
- Round log
- The list beside the checkpoint round that shows each checkpoint you answered.
When a page is wrong
The FDNY revises the Study Material from time to time, and we can miss a change. If a rule on this site does not match the current FDNY text, please tell us through the contact page. Until a fix is live, the FDNY text is the one to follow.
